On Sunday morning,
December 26, one day after Christmas, an earthquake struck an area off the
coast of Indonesia. It was one
of the strongest earthquakes recorded in the last one hundred years.
A short time after the
first quakes, many areas of Southeast Asia were hit by a series of Tsunamis. Tsunamis or tidal waves usually happen
whenever there is an underwater earthquake, landslide, or volcanic
activity. The countries hit by
these waves, some measuring 10 meters in height included Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Sir Lanka, and the Maldives. The
effects of these Tsunamis were even felt as far away as the west coast of Africa.
At the time the tsunamis
occurred, thousands of people were enjoying the holiday season at various
vacation resorts around the region.
Also, millions of people live along the coastlines of those
countries, which felt the full brunt of these devastating waves. continued Mr. William Tackett
